Information from the Academic Council’s meeting 4 December 2017
In its meeting on 4 December 2017 the Academic Council (AC) approved of 38 master’s theses. AC would also like to have annual statistics of approved diplomas.
Hiring procedures at Hanken
AC proposes that LL.D. Petra Sund-Norrgård be appointed Professor in Commercial Law. The position is not subject to the Tenure Track criteria as the recruitment started before the new personnel instruction came into force.
AC accepted professors Thomas Gehrig, Steffen Huck and Christian Schultz as experts in the process of hiring a professor and an associate professor to the Department of Economics. A total of 20 persons will be called in for interviews for these two positions. Both positions are subject to Hanken’s Tenure Track criteria.
Revised study plans from 1 August 2018
The study plans in a major subject on both bachelor’s and master’s level are to have the same compulsory courses and learning goals, and equivalent content, regardless of campus. The compulsory courses have to reflect the core competences that every student has to possess, both on bachelor’s and master’s level. It’s also important to streamline the core content of the courses with regards to our accreditations.
Vaasa and Helsinki campus can use the special competences of the teaching staff to form specialisations within the pool of elective courses.
AC recommends a minimum of two compulsory main subject courses.
According to the Hanken mission, we educate responsible economists. In order to improve the students’ knowledge of CSR and meet the demand for deeper knowledge of business analytics, a new module, Global competence (5 ECTS), was proposed. AC approved of the proposal.
Amendment to the examination regulation
AC supports the changing of the examination regulation regarding language studies. The master’s degree at Hanken will in the future contain a minimum of 5 ECTS in languages, whereas the regulations now demand 6 ECTS of language studies. Language courses that at the moment are 6 ECTS will be streamlined to either 5 ECTS or 10 ECTS.
Admission quota 2019-2020
AC supports the end goal of admitting 300 bachelor students and 160 master’s students. This concerns the admission in the year 2019 and 2020.
Improving a passed examination
The instruction regarding studies and examination will be revised concerning examination. A student can write an exam during the predetermined examination days. A student may try to improve a passed exam once. The better mark will then apply.
The examiner can decide that passed assignments from previous years may still be valid, but this is to be specified in the course description. An examiner cannot promise that an assignment will be valid in the future, e.g. next year.

Within the electronic management of doctoral theses, the following decisions have been made:

AC proposes to the University Council that Maj-Britt Höglund would be Martti Mäkinen’s deputy in the AC. The AC also needs two new student representatives as Sofia Slotte and Kenneth Nilsson both are in line to resign. The recruitment is in progress.
