Hanken aims to be carbon neutral by 2030 and works towards nature positivity.

Commitment to Carbon Neutrality and Nature Positivity

Hanken has signed the Climate Emergency Letter, an initiative started by SDG Accord - the university and college sector's collective response to the global goals. By signing the letter, Hanken has committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2030 among other commitments. We are also guided by The Council of Rectors of Finnish Universities (Unifi) Theses on sustainable development and responsibility.

Climate Action Plan

The Climate Action Plan reflects our commitment to reducing climate and environmental impacts, striving for nature positivity.

The Climate Action Plan sets ambitious targets:

  • Carbon neutrality by 2030 for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. (Scope 1 refers to direct emissions and Scope 2 emissions from purchased energy.)
  • Halving emissions from the value chain (Scope 3 upstream) by 2030. Hanken's value chain includes emissions from purchasing and procurement, waste, business travel, commuting, and remote working.
  • A dedicated goal and plan for the investment portfolio (Scope 3 downstream) to be introduced in 2026.

Our carbon footprint 2025

Our calculated carbon dioxide emissions from 2025 are 11 876 tCO2e market-based and 12 000 tCO2e location based. This includes the emissions from Hanken facilities, electricity and heating in Hanken owned and operated offices, purchased goods and services, fuel and energy related activities, waste generated and water used in operations, student and employee travel, student and employee commuting and teleworking, and Hanken investment portfolio. See summary of market-based emissions according to the GHG Protocol categories below.

tCO2e 2018 (base year) 2024 2025
Scope 1 99 0 3
Scope 2 507 76 56
Scope 3 upstream 2100 1 937 1846
Scope 3 downstream 9 560 12 096 9 972
Total 12 266 14 109 11 876

We have offset our calculated carbon footprint annually in 2019, 2020 and partly in 2021.

Please note however, that the calculation methodology has developed over time and hence the figures in the older reports are not compatible with what is presented on the table above.
