Hanna Silvola is an Associate Professor of Accounting (with tenure) at Hanken School of Economics. Her research interests are in sustainable investing and in measuring, reporting and assuring corporate sustainability information for strategic decision-making. Silvola has published numerous articles in highly regarded journals such as Accounting, Organizations & Society, Management Accounting Research, Accounting, Auditing and Accountability Journal, Journal of Business Ethics, Journal of Small Business Management, Corporate Governance: An International Review; and Journal of Management Accounting Review. Hanna Silvola is the author of a book entitled “Sustainable Investing: Beating the Market with ESG” (Palgrave Macmillan 2021) which has also been translated into Chinese.
Her research project “How to measure and analyse ESG information to support sustainable business?” received a total of 200,000€ research funding from the Finnish Foundation for Economic Education for the period 2020-2022. She now leads the ”Actions for Sustainable Business Reneval” research project which Business Finland finances with 163,000€ in 2021-2023. She won the Hans Dalborg Award for Excellence in Financial Economic Research in 2021 (SEK 210,000).
Silvola is also a Member of the Consultative Working Group on Sustainable Finance in the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). She is an active speaker and commentator in Sustainable Finance related committees, media and Hanken & SSE’s Executive Education. She has also designed several ESG training programs and professional certificates for the finance and audit industries and companies.
She has previously worked and held visiting appointments at Aalto University School of Business (Espoo, Finland), London School of Economics (London, UK), Stanford University (Stanford, USA), the University of New South Wales (Sydney, Australia), and Monash University (Melbourne, Australia).
