I am Assistant Professor at Hanken School of Economics.
My research is in the field of industrial organization. My work focuses on the competitive effects of sustainability agreements, common ownership, subcontracting, joint bidding, and renewables in electricity markets. I teach two Bachelor courses: International economics and Economics of organisation and information, and I also teach in the Competition economics course at the Master level.
My most recent research:
a) "Horizontal agreements about the use of a natural resource" analyzes agreement between competitors about their use of a natural resource. The agreement can specify an absolute usage or a relative usage, per unit of production. The analysis asks three questions: (i) Can a horizontal agreement induce firms to substitute away from the natural resource and towards other resources? (ii) What is the effect on the price paid by consumers? And (iii) which type of usage restriction will firms choose?
b) "Secret bilateral forward contracting" (accepted for publication in Journal of Industrial Economics) includes practical results about how competition authorities should analyze prospective mergers between electricity producers, in the presence of bilateral trading. It highlights a distinction between the ownership distribution of renewable generation facilities and the ownership distribution of conventional generation facilities.
c) "Overlapping ownership and product innovation" (joint with Rune Stenbacka, published in International Journal of Industrial Organization, 2023) helps to understand the effect of an increase in common or cross-ownership on the incentives for firms to innovate and bring a new product to the market. We also analyze whether consumers can benefit.
Policy insights from my research have been presented in seminars at various competition authorities. I operated as academic expert at the ACE conference in 2022 to discuss the sustainability agreement between Shell and TotalEnergies and in 2023 to discuss the use of the as-efficient-competitor test in the market for thermal energy in Latvia.
