Hanken student Emma Kärkkäinen has won the Association for Environmental Management’s (Ympäristöjohtamisen yhdistys, YJY) master’s thesis competition with her thesis “Implementing sustainable strategy through green investment projects: a multi-level case study from Finnish process industries”.

Emma Kärkkäinen wrote her thesis in collaboration with her employer AFRY. According to her, working on a commissioned thesis has its pros and cons, as you have to balance both academic and practical expectations. Overall she still enjoyed the thesis project.

“The topic meaningfully connected my previous work in engineering with my degree at Hanken. I feel very honoured to have received the award from YJY. I graduated quite recently, so the award was a wonderful way to wrap up my studies at Hanken. I would also like to thank my supervisor Kaisa Penttilä for invaluable advice throughout the thesis process”, says Kärkkäinen.

“Emma's thesis is very timely and an excellent example of our students' ability to do practically applicable and scientifically grounded work. It has been very interesting to supervise Emma's thesis as she contributed with new understanding and management of sustainability issues,  focusing on industrial investment projects, says Kaisa Penttilä, associated researcher at Hanken.

The Association for Environmental Management organises a biannual thesis competition that address environmental and sustainability leadership topics in a comprehensive way. The two winners of the master's thesis category were both awarded a grant of 650 euros.
