Environmental Awareness
Hanken strives to promote sustainable development within all its activities from an economic, social and ecological viewpoint. The challenge is to create such models and practices that support us to operate in a sustainable manner.
All The School's activities must at the core be environmentally sound and characterised by sustainability. This means among other things that everyone should have skills to contribute to a development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the possibility of future generations to meet their own needs.
Our students are to develop skills and competencies that are relevant for their future professional lives and roles as decision-makers.
Higher education must also play an active role locally, nationally and internationally in enhancing knowledge and action for sustainable development through research and training in collaboration with the community.
The School's Environment Handbook (currently only available in Swedish) builds on Hanken's overall strategy, which states that the university develops innovative work environments that emphasize cooperation, respect and equality. The objective in Hanken's overall personnel policy is to be a developing, fair, safe, and effective organisation. The principle of security means that university staff should be able to work in conditions that are not harmful to the physical and mental health, and that the work environment is pleasant and concsious efforts to prevent and resolve conflicts in the workplace are made.
Education in sustainable development is offered at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In research, it is a challenge to identify the risks of non-sustainable business and consumption, and to assess how business and consumption patterns could be changed towards a more sustainabledevelopment.
Hanken carries a special responsibility because of its societal role as educator of future decision makers. The University will therefore lead by example and strive to raise environmental awareness among staff and students. The realisation of environmental responsibility involves an active quest to reduce waste, energy and water consumption and to minimize the use of materials and products that are not part of the natural cycle.
