Hanken's professor emeritus and former dean David B. Grant has passed away

In memoriam David B Grant
Professor David B. Grant passed away peacefully in Kingston upon Hull on Aug 9, 2024, surrounded by his dear wife Anna and their cats and dog. He has been a vital part of the Hanken community for decades; having started as a senior distinguished visiting professor, he not only became professor but also the first international Dean of Research and Societal Impact of the Hanken School of Economics.

Professor Grant never had a chance to truly retire but continued as dean until way over 70, and even after that as emeritus professor. He has fully embraced the Finnish cultural and academic environment while always coming with valuable perspective from his academic career in other countries: his native Canada, the UK, and even Thailand. Hanken has had a privilege to learn from his vast experience. Way beyond that, he will be globally missed.

Professor Grant has contributed to the community in so many ways. There are countless publications including many textbooks that supply chain management scholars use around the world. He was an expert in sustainable supply chain management, retail, and even fashion logistics. No wonder he always dressed smart, though his arguably favourite was a magenta golf shirt.

He inspired even his masters’ students to present at academic conferences and to publish. He has supervised so many doctoral researchers that he numbered them, and proudly presented at one of his keynotes how different generations of them come together over time. True to his past as a college basketball coach, he mentored people, and took care of his network; whether at a conference, on the golf course, at an ice hockey game, by showing people around in Scotland where the Grant clan is from, or over a barbecue or bevvie.

He was savvy, and always up to date with current events, trends, and technologies. One could talk to him about anything, and he could explain historical backgrounds and cultural idiosyncrasies in a down to earth manner to anyone unfamiliar with them. All the time, he kept his eye on the ball and asked critical questions, playing the devil’s advocate. As a former banker, he clearly understood cash flow and return on investment, while of Scottish heritage, would be thrifty. As a true logistician, he would always advise on the best way to get from A to B. He was highly dedicated to his work, always keeping promises, deadlines, and his commitment to high quality; though disappointed if others did not. He would enjoy jazz as much as Fingerpori, and was a true gentleman, entertaining with his wit and rough charm.

Now the coach is gone, a beloved husband to Anna, and a true friend. He will leave behind a family in the UK, France and Canada. The staff and students at Hanken remember Professor Emeritus David B. Grant with warmth and our thoughts are with his family and friends.

His last wish was to honour his life by donating to the Dove House at https://www.dovehouse.org.uk/
