Alumni Interview with Einar Nordström: "Combining theory and practice has been key to my career"

Man i ett kontorlandskap
Einar Nordström thrives on new challenges, whether in his career, studies, or hobbies. When he began his studies at Hanken in 2018, he was drawn to the university’s flexibility in tailoring study programs to individual interests.

"I've always been fascinated by business management and the startup world. The idea of one day founding my own company has been a strong motivator for me. Choosing management and organisation as my major felt natural—it provided me with a broad understanding of how businesses function, both structurally and from a leadership perspective."

Like so many other students, Nordström experienced firsthand the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. His first year at Hanken followed a traditional path, but everything changed in his second year.

"Suddenly, we were studying remotely, and quarantine became part of everyday life. It was a challenging period, and the years started to blur together. But after the pandemic, I began my master’s studies, and those years turned out to be some of the best of my life. I made many new friends, and I still keep in touch with them today."

During his time at Hanken, Nordström also developed a keen interest in law. This led him to pursue legal studies at the University of Helsinki. After graduating from Hanken, he joined Roschier, one of the largest law firms in the Nordics, as a Project Management Office (PMO) Specialist.

"Right now, I specialise in legal project management, which means I work alongside lawyers to optimise their working methods. We focus on improving communication, conflict management, delegation, and leadership skills. A significant part of our work also involves understanding the emotional aspects of leadership and structuring work efficiently."

Reflecting on his studies, Nordström credits Hanken with providing him with valuable analytical skills and the ability to bridge theory with practical applications—something that continues to benefit him in his career.

"My best advice for current students is to keep an open mind when selecting courses. Don’t be afraid to choose courses that integrate theory with hands-on experience. The practical elements not only deepen your understanding but also equip you with skills you can apply directly in your career. And don’t forget to build your network—your fellow students could become key contacts in the future."

Outside of work, Nordström is a passionate athlete, having competed in football, tennis, and floorball. He also channels his creativity into a YouTube channel that he co-founded with a friend from Australia, where they document their hands-on projects.

"We've restored a 1970s Mini, built and sailed boats, and even brewed our own beer. It’s a great way to combine our interests and share our projects with others."

Music is another integral part of Nordström’s life. As a multi-instrumentalist, he plays a wide range of instruments.

"Guitar is my strongest suit, but I also play all string instruments, piano, drums—and I sing as well. Over the years, I’ve had the chance to perform quite a bit."
