Sustainability in Education
One of our strategic objectives is to advocate responsibility and sustainability in teaching and learning and as part of that objective, we aim to achieve the following:
Bachelor studies
The learning objectives for bachelor studies state that graduates should have knowledge and understand- ing of social responsibility, and global and intercultural issues.
- Students demonstrate basic knowledge and understanding of social responsibility in a global context.
- Students demonstrate elementary intercultural knowledge and understanding and can act in an international context.
In our bachelor programmes, there is a mandatory basic course in corporate social responsibility, which all students have to take and it is recommended to be completed in the first year of the Bachelor studies. The course introduces key concepts and perspectives that describe the challenges, opportunities and risks that companies face regarding their social and environmental responsibility, and how these are linked to financial responsibility. The course has also included completion of Sustainability Literacy Test (SULITEST).
We also offer different courses in sustainability and corporate responsibility in all subjects, so students can learn more about sustainable development topics regardless of choice of major. Bachelor students can also choose Corporate Responsibility or Supply Chain and Social Responsibility as their minor.
Master studies
The learning objectives for master studies state that graduates should have an international perspective and understand the implications of social responsibility and sustainable development.
- Students can analyse business and organisational issues in an international setting
- Students recognize the social responsibilities and impacts of business and un- derstand how these are connected to the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
All masters students at Hanken are required to take a mandatory 3 ECTS course in social responsibility. The course is titled Social responsibility across business studies and is a part of the mandatory 5 ECTS Global Competency module. The course provides master’s students an introduction to key concepts and perspectives that describe the challenges, opportunities and risks that organisations and more broadly societies, face regarding social and environmental responsibilities. Also, students learn about perspectives on social responsibility from many subjects at Hanken and are familiarised with the SDGs.
Master students can also choose Corporate Responsibility or Supply Chain and Social Responsibility as a minor.

Doctoral studies
Hanken provides access to a wide range of doctoral courses, seminars, and workshops on topics related to sustainability. Doctoral students are also offered a course in research ethics - a topic that is extremely important at Hanken and a part of our research strategy.
We also offer a course in social responsibility and social inequalities for doctoral students, as a part of the The Finnish doctoral program in business studies - KATAJA. The course is titled Responsible Organising: New perspectives on social inequalities.
Executive MBA
The learning objectives state that EMBA graduates are responsible leaders in a global context.
- EMBA graduates address CSR dilemmas
- EMBA graduates apply business knowledge in an international setting
Hanken’s triple crown accredited MBA programme offers a one-day module in corporate social responsibility as one of its core elements, Sustainable Business in a Global Context. We plan to in the future include more sustainability elements to promote a more coherent and holistic learning on sustainability issues.
