Place: Room 309, Hanken School of Economics, Helsinki
Opponent: Dr. Ivy Lynn Bourgeault, University of Ottawa.
Custos: Professor Emeritus Jeff Hearn, Hanken School of Economics
Tricia Cleland Silva’s doctoral thesis examines the transnational labour market of nurses and how nurses are managed across national borders.
- Historically, the occupation of nursing has been constructed in terms of gender, race, and class which has led to hierarchies and inequalities in the workplace, says Tricia Cleland Silva
To illustrate this phenomenon, Cleland Silva’s thesis documents the recruitment and placement of 75 Filipino nurses by Finnish private and public organisations during the years 2007-2010. This private recruitment of internationally educated nurses was the first in Finnish history.
- Transnational human resource management practices apply specific criteria to select and place non-Finnish nurses, which affects how the nurses are included or excluded within the daily operations of the workplace, Cleland Silva claims.
With the use of social world maps, Cleland Silva illustrates how organisations and their representatives interact and talk about the nurse occupation in Finland and the transnational recruitment of nurses, in particular, the Filipino nurses. Her study further discusses how the existing practices influence how organizations are formed to create a business in transnationally managing nurses, and how the nurses are socially constructed for Finnish clients.
- My interviews reveal not only the organisations’ claims of responsibility in regards to the recruitment and placement of nurses from the Philippines, but also how the transnational management of the nurses is or should be practiced in Finland, Cleland Silva explains.
