Finnish as a minor
Study Finnish as a minor!
It is possible to study Finnish as a minor at Hanken as a part of your degree. The minor is called "Finnish with Business Communication" and consists of elective modules up to 25 ECTS. At Bachelor's level, the compulsory courses in Finnish should also be included in this minor. At Master's level, these compulsory courses are not considered if you have already included them in your Bachelor's degree.
In consultation with the subject coordinator of Finnish, you can also plan courses from other universities in Finland into your minor. A minor in Finnish may also include studies in communication and media, literature, translation studies and interpretation as well as in-depth courses in verbal communication.
Why do we recommend that you study Finnish as a minor?
As regards Finnish in Finland, whether in the public or private sector, it is generally assumed that the employee has a very high level of proficiency in Finnish. Most posts require at least a good knowledge, but often an excellent knowledge of Finnish, and only a few academic posts are advertised where a satisfactory knowledge of the majority language of the country is sufficient. In Finnish-speaking municipalities, excellent knowledge of the language is usually required.
Studying Finnish as a minor at Hanken provides not only Finnish language skills but also knowledge of communication within organisations, insights into meeting and negotiation techniques, leadership and rhetoric, as well as profiling and marketing, depending on the other focus of your degree. Both practical verbal skills and professional writing are emphasized within the minor.
A good command of the second national language is an important part of the company's overall knowledge capital for the company's profile and image. This is precisely why it is important to study Finnish, either individual advanced courses or as a minor.
Studies in Finnish with Business Communication
For Hanken Students
You can choose Finnish as a minor either at Bachelor's or Master's level. The minor consists of 25 ECTS. At Bachelor's level, you will include the compulsory courses in Finnish in your minor, which gives you 6 ECTS. In addition to these, you can choose 19 ECTS from our in-depth courses to be included in your minor, totaling in 25 ECTS.
If you have taken the compulsory courses in Finnish at B level, you can also include the course 5729-E Kieliopin kertauskurssi in your minor. However, this is not possible for those who have taken the compulsory courses at C-level or native language level, or for those who are taking the minor at Master's level. The reason is that Kieliopin kertauskurssi is a preparatory course for the compulsory written course at B level, for the course 5715-1.
You can take Finnish with Business Communication as a minor regardless of whether you are a Hanken student in Vaasa or Helsinki. The course content and offerings are the same.
